Rushana Island
A moment to unwind in the city.
At Rushana Island in Higashi-Mukojima, enjoy signature "Satori-chan" ningyo-yaki, deep-fried manju, thick-noodle yakisoba tossed in special sweet sauce, and okonomiyaki. Great for takeout or casual drinks.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
What immediately catches the eye on the counter at Rushana Island is "Satori-chan," a doll-shaped sponge cake cherished as a good-luck treat. The variety of fillings is extensive, ranging from sweet red bean paste studded with lucky fuku-beans and rich custard cream to savory melted cheese, as well as an enticing blend of red bean paste and cream cheese. When dining in, the deep-fried version—served in the style of age-manju—is hard to pass up. The crisp, fragrant shell encases warm sweetness, making it just as appealing as a bar snack alongside a drink as it is for an afternoon treat.
Beyond sweet pastries, the shop prepares satisfying hot dishes. Thick noodles coated in a rich sweet sauce and crowned with a soft onsen egg can be ordered with pork, pork offal, or stewed beef sinew (bokkake), offering the casual, nostalgic comfort of a seaside food stall. The menu also includes chewy, festival-style okonomiyaki packed with lotus root, cabbage, tempura scraps, and egg, along with handheld salted rice balls.
Drinks range from coffee to beer and other alcoholic beverages, and takeout is readily accommodated. With its relaxed, welcoming downtown Tokyo neighborhood atmosphere, it is an easy place to drop by, whether nibbling on sweet cakes or savoring savory street bites.
